Wine tourism in Serbia has become essential for all hedonists and lovers of premium wines. The geographical position and climatic conditions have allowed residents of almost all parts of the country to cultivate vineyards. The three main regions are: Central Serbia, Vojvodina, and Kosovo and Metohija. These are divided into 22 viticultural regions consisting of 77 vineyards. Wine tourism is gaining more and more enthusiasts who discover all the charms of these trips, where you can taste up to 700 different types of wine. Quality time spent with family and friends has proven to be a unique opportunity to visit historical sites and natural beauties found at every step of these picturesque tours. Friendly hosts, in addition to visiting wine cellars and tasting selected wines, often offer accommodation, making a stay of several days possible.

Wine Route Pomoravlje

Located in the central part of Serbia, around the Great, Western, and Southern Morava rivers, it is a two-hour drive from Belgrade. This largest viticultural region in the country is also known as the Historical Wine Route because many monasteries along it had their own vineyards, such as Ravanica, Manasija, and Kalenic. About seventy significant wine producers are mainly concentrated around Krusevac, Jagodina, Paracin, and Trstenik, while small family wineries are nestled in picturesque landscapes. This fertile area is also home to the oldest grape varieties in Serbia – Prokupac and Tamjanika.

Wine Route Šumadija

The Wine Route Šumadija, or the Royal Route, was named after the famous winery in Oplenac built by King Aleksandar Karadjordjevic in 1931, laying the foundations of modern Serbian winemaking. The center of this region is only 100 km from Belgrade, and the heart of Šumadija – Kragujevac, 150 km from Nikola Tesla Airport. This hilly area is the most significant wine industry region, dominated by oak, ash, and poplar forests and the rolling terrains of the Rudnik and Bukulja mountain slopes. On the eastern side is the wide valley of the Great Morava, through which the international highway E 75 passes. Over 30 wineries and 2 monastery cellars produce top-quality wines, including the essential Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Prokupac.

Wine Route Srem – Fruška Gora

The fertile Pannonian soil, decades of winemaking experience, and mysterious recipes have made the residents of Srem the most skilled vineyard workers. Family wineries are located in 60 locations, with Sremski Karlovci being the unrivaled center with as many as 36 wine cellars. Authentic sweet, strong, and aromatic Srem wines Bermet and Ausbruch have inspired many poets and travel writers. Italian Riesling is the most famous semi-dry white wine with a slightly sweet taste and a subtle hint of bitterness. For all connoisseurs, tasting Cabernet Sauvignon, made from dark purple grapes combined with fruit, herbs, and spices, is a must, justifying its title as the king of wines.

Wine Route Župa

The rich wine tradition and the large number of wineries in a relatively small area have made Župa an attractive point on the journey through the wine routes of Serbia. It is located in the southern part of the Three Moravas viticultural region, at the foot of Kopaonik, centered in Aleksandrovac. Archaeological sites from the prehistoric period, as well as medieval monasteries Drenča, Veluće, and Rudenica, are unmissable historical locations not to be missed when visiting this area. On the other hand, Župa is also an attractive tourist region surrounded by ski resorts on Kopaonik and thermal spas. For all lovers of active holidays and cycling, there are numerous marked mountain trails. On an area of 1500 hectares, there are a little more than 50 wineries offering Riesling, Tamjanika, and Prokupac. The International Wine Fair Župa is held in Aleksandrovac every spring, and in the fall, the famous Župska Berba takes place.
